GMC Warranty, Service Contract, Protection Plan Glossary
Here are some of the words and phrases you'll see when reviewing GM Protection Plan, MRP vehicle service, maintenance contracts and GMC Factory Warranty Coverage.
Agreement Term: An agreement term is the time and mileage during which a contract is in effect.
Alternate Transportation: GM Protection Plan Major Guard, Value Guard and Smart Protection will pay the cost to rent a replacement vehicle or for public transportation whenever two or more manufacturer's labor time guide hours are required for a covered repair or if your GMC must be kept overnight.
Basic Guard: GM Protection Plan's essential vehicle service contract (a.k.a. GMC Extended Warranty), covering four major assemblies (engine, transmission / transaxle, fuel system and front / rear-wheel-drive assemblies) for parts and labor costs, as well as Towing for covered repairs.
Cancellation: An act that ends a GM Protection Plan (a.k.a. GMC Extended Warranty) contract earlier than the scheduled contract expiration. Cancellation requests made within 60 days of GM Protection Plan purchase will be refunded in full if no claim has been made. After 60 days, contracts will be canceled using a pro rata method. Fees and requirements vary by state.
Claim: A request for payment for services or repairs received based on coverage provided by a vehicle service contract, vehicle maintenance contract or insurance policy.
Contract Expiration: The GMC's mileage or date on which a vehicle service or maintenance contract ends. All vehicle maintenance and service contracts purchased end at the time or mileage selected (whichever comes first) calculated from the plan purchase date and odometer mileage at the time of plan sale.
Contract Inception: The GMC's mileage or date on which vehicle service or maintenance contract coverage begins. All vehicle maintenance contracts and vehicle service contracts purchased vehicles begin on the plan purchase date and at the odometer mileage at the time of purchase.
Deductible: This is the amount you pay per repair visit for covered repairs. If the same covered part fails again, no deductible will apply.
Extended Warranty As quoted by the FTC - A service contract (protection plan) is a promise to perform (or pay for) certain repairs or services. Sometimes called an "GMC extended warranty", a service contract is not a warranty as defined by federal law. A service contract may be arranged at any time and always costs extra; a GMC warranty comes with a new car and is included in the original price. The separate and additional cost distinguishes a service contract from a warranty.
GM Protection Plan: General Motors Protection Plans are vehicle service contracts (aka GMC Extended Warranties) and vehicle maintenance contracts for vehicles sold by GM and affiliated dealers.
Goodwrench Care: A vehicle maintenance contract that covers a fixed number of oil changes and filter replacements for leased or purchased GM cars, light-duty trucks and vans.
In-Service Date: The date on which a GMC is first placed into service. Generally, this is the date of a customer purchase for vehicles sold as "new." Exceptions may include consumer purchases of dealership "demo" cars and company-owned GMC's whose in-service dates will reflect the beginning of dealership or company use.
In-Warranty: A vehicle that is within the GMC's new vehicle limited warranty coverage.
Major Guard: GM Protection Plan's most comprehensive, premium vehicle service contract (aka GMC Extended Warranty), covering virtually every component of the vehicle as well as providing Alternate Transportation and Roadside Assistance, including Towing.
MRP: Mechanical Repair Protection is a vehicle service contract and maintenance contract for buyers of non-GM vehicles sold by non-GM dealers with a GM affiliation dealership.
New Vehicle Limited Warranty Period: The time and mileage for which the manufacturer's new vehicle limited warranty is in effect.
Out-of-Warranty: A GMC whose time and mileage exceeds the manufacturer's new vehicle limited warranty term.
Pro-rata Cancellation Refund: A cancellation refund based on the lesser of days or miles of coverage remaining. (Fees and requirements vary by state.)
Roadside Assistance: A part of Major Guard and Smart Protection coverage that includes 24-hour-a day, toll-free service for flat tire change, towing, battery jump, locksmith / key service and out-of-gas fuel delivery. Up to $50 will be authorized or reimbursed for use of these services.
Smart Care: A GM Protection Plan vehicle maintenance contract that covers basic scheduled maintenance services such as oil changes, oil filters, tire rotations and chassis lubrication.
Smart Protection: A GM Protection Plan vehicle service contract for leased GM cars, light-duty trucks and vans. Smart Protection provides coverage equivalent to Major Guard, covering virtually every major vehicle system and component against failure. Smart Protection also includes Roadside Assistance and Alternate Transportation.
Transfer: The act of moving a GM Protection Plan from the current vehicle owner to the new owner when the vehicle is sold. (A small administrative fee may apply.)
Value Guard: The GM Protection Plan's quality, broad-coverage vehicle service contract (aka GMC Extended Warranty) that covers parts and labor expenses for nine major assemblies (engine, transmission / transaxle, front / rear-wheel-drive assemblies, vehicle manufacturer-installed air conditioning systems, braking system components, front suspension, electrical system, fuel system and steering system) as well as Alternate Transportation and Towing.
Vehicle Service Contract (VSC): An agreement that covers the parts and labor costs associated with the repair of a mechanical failure; also known by several other names including GMC mechanical service agreements, GMC extended service contracts, GMC protection plans and GMC extended warranties.
Vehicle Maintenance Contract (VMC): An agreement that covers specific maintenance services according to the scheduled time and mileage requirements in your owner's manual.
